Varistors

The passive electronic components used to protect electronic circuits from overvoltage are called varistors. They are made of a ceramic material that is specially treated to have a non-linear resistance characteristic. Under normal operating conditions, varistors have a high electrical resistance. However, as soon as the applied voltage exceeds a certain threshold value, the varistor abruptly reduces its resistance. As a result, it dissipates the overvoltage current and protects sensitive electronic components from damage.
